SHIRLEY HOWARD - Group Fitness Instructor
ABOUT ME (in a nutshell): I have been teaching aqua aerobics since 1988. I am current in Fitness Australia National Registration (Cert # Q 130450) and have current Senior First Aid Certificate. My ongoing training has included specialist courses in Combat H2O, Seniors, Deep Water Aqua, Pool Pilates and Watsu. I have qualified in Certificate 3 as Group Fitness Instructor, and trained through ACHPER (Perth) as Fitness Leader and Gym Instructor. I have certificates in Therapeutic Massage, Reflexology, Group Educator Training (Cert 3) and Intentional Helping (Counseling skills for human service workers, AQF Level 5) CSTC. During the time I have been in Perth, I have trained and coached instructors in Aqua Aerobics & adult learners in dynamics of group facilitation; written and facilitated personal development and meditation courses. ("Health and Well-being" 4 week course; "Discovering and Healing the Inner Child" 8 week course; "Vocal Dynamics and Voice Care" Workshop).
2011: I was a successful nominee of 100 hundred women celebrating with BPW Joondalup.
2012: I began campaigning for Breast Cancer Care WA (BCCWA), raising $1080.
2013: Entered and finished The Stampede and Run-a-Muck 5 km mud obstacle courses, raising money for their charities.
2014: Campaigned for Leukaemia Foundation (The World's Greatest Shave) Raising $2500 and totally shaved my head.

SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR AQUA CLASSES
Please do not enter the pool until all Children and Swim School staff have exited the water. Classes are 1 hour and includes warm up, mobility/stretching, cardio-vascular and strengthening, cool-down/stretch phases.
Please be aware that I cannot always answer my phone while I am working, but please keep trying. If you have a mobile, text me. If I receive a missed call, I will return the call to that number (provided it does not come up as a private number).
EQUIPMENT
We have a wide range of equipment that is often used during the strengthening component of the class. Webbed gloves, long and short noodles, kickboards, balls and barbells are all used. However, please make sure that you will not aggravate any injury/medical condition before using any equipment.

SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR AQUA CLASSES
- Please make sure you have filled out a “Health Evaluation Form”. This information is strictly confidential.
- See me before class begins to discuss any medical conditions or concerns.
- Follow my instructions and directions in class, as failure to do so may result in injury.
- Make sure you have any medicine you may require with you, i.e. Ventolin.
- Never exercise after a large meal or after drinking alcohol.
- Always monitor your own performance and STOP exercising if you notice any of the following symptoms; dizziness, chest pains, shortness of breath, muscular weakness, persistent aches and pains or persistent fatigue following exercise.
- Please bring a plastic drink bottle with water/sports drink to all classes.
- Please be considerate of other patrons while exercising. This includes excessive splashing, being too close into others’ personal space and excessive talking.
- Ideal working working depth is chest deep.
- Goggles and flippers are NOT allowed during Aqua classes, as this is a safety hazard
- Lap swimming is NOT allowed while there are other patrons in the pool.
- Please be aware that we are exercising in water, so you WILL get wet!!
- Please keep showering times to a minimum if others are waiting & to conserve water.
- Please read “Medical Condition Considerations For Aquatic Exercise” handout.
